Savage-Shepard's Hester-Davenport's Family Tree

July 25, 2000, marked the 100th anniversary of the Birth of REVEREND ARCHIBALD SAVAGE, who died on March 5, 1996.

Our current family history can be traced to his father,

• Nathaniel F. Savage, aka Papa Savage. Papa Savage was (b.September 1862) at Green Grove, Arkansas. He married a lady (whose name is unknown) and they had eight children: JIMMY (b.March, 1881); SAMMY (b.June, 1885 - d.January 6, 1981); CARRIE (b.March, 1887); ROSIE SAVAGE LOFTON (b.November, 1888); JOSEI SAVAGE THOMAS (b. February,1890); PEARL (b.October, 1891); ODIE (b.July, 1897): and LOVEY (b.December, 1898).

  
  

  After the death of his first wife, Papa Savage married ELLA SHEPERD, who was fourteen years his junior. Papa Savage and Grandma Ella had a fraternal twin of ARCHIBALD, and a daughter (b.& d. July 25, 1900); the twin daughter died at birth. The last child was EAGLE aka Robert (b. December 1904 - d. January 1900). Grandma Ella died when Archibald was six and Eagle was two.

• William Henry Hester, aka Papa Hester (b. December 1868 - d. November 25, 1958), was fathered by a Caucasian man, MR.MARKS, with a Chocataw Indian Mother, named POLLY. He was born at Tchula, Mississippi. He and his half-brother, JOHN HAMILTON, have the same mother. Mr. Marks helped to rear Papa Hester, and when he reached his teen' years, allowed him to manage his grocery store. (MATTIE HESTER SAVSGE recalls a trip with her father, Papa Hester, made to Memphis. Papa Hester took his father, Mr. Marks, to Memphis for alcohol abuse treatment.)

  
  

• Mattie Hester Savage's grandmother, POLLY DAVENPORT (b.1846, on the continent of Africa), came to America on a slave ship with her pregnant mother (name unknown). Polly's brother, JOE, accompanied them. Baby brother, STENCE, was born on the slave ship en route to America.

  
  

  Polly Davenport became the house slave of the ship's captain, CAPTAIN BROWN, and was subsequently impregnated. The child was named MARY EMMA (b. December 1870) at Yazoo City, Mississippi. Captain Brown allowed Polly Davenport to marry a Negro Man, MORRIS AVERHART, (b. 1844), who gave Mary Emma his surname.

  
  

  Morris Averhart and Polly Davenport Averhart had four children together: MORRIS, aka Buddy; WILLIE AVERHART STROTHER, aka Babe; HARRY, aka Henry/Lil' Uncle/Shoat; and NANCY AVERHART COLENBERG aka Dink/Lil' Auntie.

  
  

• WILLIAM HENRY HESTER and MARY EMMA AVERHART were married and moved to Holmes County (near Lexington, Mississippi). They had ten children: ROSE ABBIE HESTER OWENS RANDLE, aka Aunt Sister (b. December 30, 1890 - d. August 25, 1992); ETHEL WILLIAMETTA HESTER DAENPORT LOGAN aka Aunt Lump (b. January 19, 1892 - d. March 1984); MARY WILLIE HESTER WALKER JONES aka Aunt Fang (b. August 21, 1894 - d. December 18, 1986); POLLY MARKS HESTER GATTIEROY DIXON aka Aunt Pauline (b September 30, 1896 - d. October 16, 1996); HAZEL SIMMIE (b. September 5, 1900 - d. July 15, 1980); JOHNIE LINCOLN (b. September 10, 1902 - d. May 20, 1982); MATTIE MORRIS HESTER SAVAGE (b. April 30, 1904 - ); EMMA LOU HESTER (b. January 2, 1907 - d. 1908); ZOHN ANDERSON (b. 1909 - d. February 4, 1993).

  
  

• Archibald's father, Papa Savage, pulled him out of school periodically to work in the fields. Archibald left his home in Hazen, Arkansas, when he was a teen'. He went to Memphis, Tennessee, where his deceased mother's brother, Henry Shepherd, lived with his wife, MADAME JERRY aka Madame C.J. Walker, colored beauticians of any standing were refereed to as "Madame" e.g. Madame C.J. Waker, who became the richest woman of her time via the invention of the straightening comb and sundry hair products.)

  Archibald found a good colored school which accepted students of all ages - the Howe Institute. He met the principal, Dr. Thomas O. Fuller, who became his spiritual friend, mentor, and paster. He also met, during that time, a beautiful young woman with intense, grey eyes - MATTIE MORRIS HESTER. Mattie had a son from a previous marriage, ARCHIE LEE WALKER aka Pep (b. April 19, 1924), reared by Mattie's sister, Mary Willie Walker. Archie encouraged Mattie to enroll at the Howe Institute along with him.

• Archibald and Mattie were married August 13, 1925, with Archibald's father, The Reverend Nathaniel F. Savage, as the officiant.

  
  

  Archibald and Mattie were "hungry" for knowledge. They rented a kitchenette apartment in the large home of Professor and Mrs. Hugh M. Gloster of Lauderdale Avenue in Memphis. Professor Gloster had a stroke, and Mattie would prepare his lunch daily in a barter with Mrs. Gloster for piano lessons. Meanwhile, Mattie became pregnant with their first child, HESTER MARIE SAVAGE JAMES BESTEDA aka Kazelle (b. March 7, 1927 - December 17, 2024), she was followed by YOULON MORRIS aka Youlon Davinci (b. June 16, 1928 - December 1, 2024); ARCHIBALD, JR aka A.B./Lil'Brother/Archie Bernard (b. November 12, 1930 - October 24, 2011); CANARY ELLA SAVAGE GIRARDEAU aka Lil' Sister (b. November 1930); ROSETTA OLIVA SAVAGE FOOTE aka Ba' Rose/Zet (b. November 3, 1932); ZOHN HAZEL (b.   Mattie Hester Savage organized and operated the very successful Savage's Kindergarten School from 1942 to 1946 in Memphis, Tennessee.

  
  

  Archibald operated the very prosperous Glo Tone Portrait Studio in Memphis for several years.

  
  

  Archibald and Mattie enjoyed many activities together, in addition to the joys and challenges of raising their children. They honeymooned at Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1925 and continued their annual visits there until Archibald was physically unable to have massages and hot baths at the springs. They also enjoyed their membership and fellowship at First Baptist Church (Known as the Beale Street Baptist Church) in MemphisTennessee, and later at Calvary Baptist Church. Beginning in 1948, they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

  History: Beale Street Baptist Church was built in 1869 and is notable for being the first Memphis church built for Blacks. It is often regarded as “the Mother of Black churches” and in 1892 was home to the first Black newspaper, The Memphis Free Speech, edited by Ida B. Wells. The church is also well known for being visited by two Presidents, Ulysses S. Grant and Theodore Roosevelt. The church originated in the home of, and was pastored by, a white minister until 1864, as a city ordinance prohibited Blacks from preaching to a congregation. In 2018, the City of Memphis designated this property as a site on the Memphis Heritage Trail. In 2022, Shelby County granted $150,000 toward the renovation of this historic landmark. The grant will help with masonry repairs, general restoration, and a roof replacement.

  Archibald retired from American Motors in 1965 and studied at Moody Bibe Institute to prepare for the ministry. During his 48 years at Calvary Baptist Church, he was licensed in 1967 under the pastorage of appointed Minister of Visitation under the pastorate of Reverend Doctor James E. Leary.
